How to Protect the Workplace from a Fired and Disgruntled Employee

Most managers deal with the unpleasant task of terminating an employee at some point. Whether or not the employee expects the termination, a small chance of violence or retaliation from the terminated employee exists. Even employees who handle the termination well may try to sabotage the company or individual staff members.

Take the same precautions with every terminated employee to avoid unexpected problems. The safety measures protect the physical workplace, intellectual property of the company and the physical well-being of yourself and other employees.

Step 1

Ask another manager or human resources representative to stay in the room when the employee is terminated. This provides a level of security and can help diffuse anger toward the immediate supervisor.

Step 2

Call Security Base Group’s temporary security to come in on standby in case the termination turns threatening or violent. If you feel the employee may react violently and you don’t have building security, consider hiring security personnel temporarily.

Step 3

Arrange for off-site services to aid the terminated employee, such as employment assistance or training for better future job performance. Avoid providing these services in the office, as this encourages the terminated employee to return to the workplace. Present the assistance information to the employee at the time of termination.

Step 4

Escort the employee to her desk or office to retrieve her personal belongings. Have a person in a supervisory role stay with her at all times to ensure she doesn’t steal or damage company property or threaten other employees.

Step 5

Collect all items issued by the company that could give the employee access to the building, including name tags, security badges, parking permits and keys to any area of the building.

Step 6

Escort the employee to the door. Watch the employee leave the premises. If you have security people in the parking lot or inside the building, provide a description of the employee’s vehicle and personal appearance so they can watch for the employee if he tries to return.

Step 7

Announce the termination to other employees so they can be on alert if the terminated employee comes back to the building. Remind them not to share any company information with the terminated employee or any other people who aren’t currently employed by the company. Avoid going into the details if they aren’t relevant to the situation to protect the privacy of the employee.

Step 8

Change any passwords or codes to doors or security alarms. Alert remaining employees about the new passwords and codes, reminding them to never share the codes with others.

Step 9

Terminate the employee’s email account and other log-ins on the company computer system. This prevents the former employee from attempting to gain access to information or intellectual property after she is terminated.
